Bio

by El Bandito

about

El Bandito is twenty years of roots music brotherhood. Two rogue musical bandits doing what they want, when they want. Wandering the outsider landscape, riding their own horse. Jeff Da Bassman plays bass like his life depended on it. Mick plays guitar and sings like there is no tomorrow. As far as they are concerned there is no tomorrow. The only task is the music. The passion. The melodies and the brotherhood of the song. From USA to Europe to Canada and the USVI, El Bandito is ready to bring their SkaBilly revival to any stage, party or laundromat.

The two main men were introduced to each other through a mutually known producer during a session in Toronto in the early nineties. They quickly set off on tours of the southern states and Europe. Mick was living in the UK for most of the 90's and Jeff was in New Jersey so touring was the only way they could spend time together. This was how they got to know and hone the complimentary elements that make El Bandito such a fresh and vital force. They don't question each other. It doesn't matter who is at the recording helm or who plays the solo or sings the harmony. What matters to these two men is that the music gets out as soon and as fresh as possible. No complications, nothing fancy.

The music is rooted in the immediacy of Mento / Ska / and Reggae. The innocence and simplicity of 60's arrangements, over which Mick adds his trademark "happy heavy" lyrics. It's Jeff Da Bassman the producer who brings it all to life in his barn. His studio method gets right to the essence and stays there. Presenting the listener with music that has pure feeling, not distracting special effects. His wizardry is capturing humanity, not technology.
